Is the Football Manager brand ever likely to make it to PS4?

In the UK and beyond, one of the biggest cult followings of a computer game is Football Manager. The football management sim, which is the brainchild of Sports Interactive, has been transporting football fans into the world of management since 1992 when it first reached the Amiga. Championship Manager 2 was its breakthrough version onto desktop PC in September 1995, and the franchise has never looked back since, regarded by some gamers as one of the most immersive computer games of all time.

The thrill of being able to manage the club you support from top to bottom is one that never leaves Football Manager fans. Whether it’s reaching the Champions League final, just like Liverpool and Spurs did last season, or avoiding relegation on the final day of the season, there are so many scenarios that can satisfy football boffins. There was talk ahead of the release of Football Manager 2020 that these thrills might be made available to PS4 owners too.

It’s been five years since a version of Football Manager was released on a PlayStation device – the now-doomed PS Vita. Meanwhile, it’s been over a decade since Football Manager 2008 was made playable on the Xbox 360. However, it has never successfully reached the PlayStation 4, or indeed the Xbox One. However, Miles Jacobson, director of the Football Manager franchise, moved to deny the rumors, insisting that Sports Interactive had “no current plans to release games” for either the PS4 or Xbox One.

Weirdly, the game has been made available on the Xbox Game Pass for PC gamers, which hasn’t stopped the conjecture that the franchise could conceivably be easily transferrable onto the Xbox One at some stage in 2020. PC and Mac OS users can download Football Manager 2020 via Steam, as well as Google Stadia. Football Manager 2020 Touch is also available with the full version of the game, while the mobile version will also be available on iOS and Android smartphones and tablets via Google Play and the App Store.
